In spring 2010, 8 online Game Design students at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh – Online Division undertook a unique challenge. They participated in a class on building virtual worlds, taught inside a virtual world. In 5.5 weeks, students unskilled in X3D/VRML each built virtual worlds based on favorite poems. The course used shapeshifting avatars, mash-ups of student work, digital trailer park tours, and simple chat sessions to instill a deep understanding of the potential of virtual space. Visitors to the event are invited to informally join the students as they share updates to their projects and ask about the course, learning online, and learning within a virtual space.

Addressing Lev Manovich’s statement that there is no understanding of virtual space in the ACM library, that it is only a loose collection of articles linked by realism in rendering and behavior, Dr. Stephen Guynup looks for answers within game theory. Adapting game designs constructs of Narratology and Ludology, the session looks to a mix of HCI/usability and film theory to explore the form and function of virtual spaces. The session pulls from current design trends, and historical norms to answer issues on the design of virtual worlds, spaces, interfaces, and realities.

No design retrospective would be complete without giving time back to the community. If you have work and can show it on your own laptop (or just need the latest version of Unity 3D, Second Life, BS Contact, or Exit Reality installed) we’d be happy to see it and hear about it. If you have favorite web3D works, texts, theories, or anything you feel ought to be seen, remembered, and learned from, you are welcome to share it. Open to the General Public, sign-up starts at 2:30. (Official Web3D conference attendees may sign up at anytime)
